On July 19, 1946, Chief Frances Garcia Cooke, the hereditary leader of local Tataviam families, died from injuries she sustained in a car crash.
Born April 17, 1883, Frances Cecilia Garcia Cooke was a descendant of the Tataviam people, the original inhabitants of the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas before European incursion.
Her father, Isidore Garcia, had been chief before her, and family on her mother’s side lived at Chaguayabit (aka Tsawayung), a Tataviam Indian village that once was at modern-day Castaic Junction..
According to her death certificate, Chief Frances died as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash on July 18, 1946, on a public highway in “rural San Fernando,” likely near Newhall, according to the SCV Historical Society.
Chief Frances succumbed to her injuries eight hours later, at 1:15 a.m. on July 19. She was buried in the Ruiz-Perea Cemetery in San Francisquito Canyon on July 23, 1946. Years later, her husband, Frederick S. “Fred” Cooke, would be buried beside her.
Her death marked the end of a leadership era for the Tataviam community, who looked to her as a cultural and familial anchor during a time when Indigenous identity was still being steadily eroded by assimilation and colonization.
Frances Cooke’s legacy remains important to the Santa Clarita Valley’s Indigenous history. Her life and death are remembered today by Tataviam descendants and those working to revitalize the tribe’s language, traditions, and recognition.
