Today In SCV History: July 25, 2018 – Groundbreaking Ceremony For New SCV Sheriff’s Station

After 50 years, on July 25, 2018, the Santa Clarita Valley celebrated the groundbreaking for the new SCV Sheriff’s Station.

The new 46,552-square-foot facility started its first phase at the beginning of 2019 following the initial groundbreaking ceremony.

The station before the updated station on Golden Valley Road was the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on Magic Mountain Parkway, which began operation in May of 1972. At that time, SCV had a population of around 50,000, which grew to about 290,000 over the next 50 years.

To accommodate the influx of the population, the new Santa Clarita 2020 Community Strategic Plan was put into place, commissioning the construction of a new police station to serve our ever-growing community.

There is also the distinct hope that a better-equipped and more efficient law enforcement will draw community members to service.

5th District County Supervisor Kathryn Barger at the groundbreaking ceremony gave praise to the future sheriff station.

“This station is going to be a wonderful way for us to show those who want to go into law enforcement why L.A. County Sheriffs are the best and premium to go into,” stated Barger.

The new station was able to house more than the regular patrol units and detainees, including members of the 9-1-1 dispatch center, Career Offenders, Burglary, Robbery, Assault (COBRA) Unit, the Crime Prevention Team, the Detective Bureau, and the Crime Impact Team, as well as a 4,000 square foot vehicle maintenance facility and helipad.

Officials hoped the $68,886,449 facility would be well-equipped to serve the ever-expanding community for at least another 50 years, according to LASD officials.

The station officially opened for operations on October 18th, 2021, and has since been the central station for the LASD. This new base of operations is “…the crown jewel of the Sheriff’s Department”, according to then-Captain Justin Diez, and will help the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department be better prepared to serve its community for the foreseeable future.
