Today In SCV History: July 7, 1949 – Nonprofit Castaic Saddle Club Incorporated

The nonprofit Castaic Saddle Club was officially incorporated on July 7, 1949, establishing what would become one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s most prominent equestrian organizations.

While some historical records suggest the club may have formed as early as 1945, its incorporation in 1949 marked its formal beginning.

Records identify John W. Johnson as one of the organization’s key figures, though several members of the Johnson family played important roles throughout its history. Byron Johnson later served as club president from 1968 to 1969.

Located off Lake Hughes Road near what is now the lower lagoon of Castaic Reservoir, the nonprofit club quickly became a gathering place for local horse enthusiasts.

By 1957, membership had grown to 87 members, and the club regularly hosted rodeos, horse shows and gymkhanas on alternating Sundays.

These events became a cherished local tradition, particularly during Independence Day celebrations. For many families, the Fourth of July meant attending the Castaic Saddle Club’s patriotic parades, rodeos and community barbecues.

The club was affiliated with the California State Horsemen’s Association, Region 9, and hosted major equestrian events that attracted notable guests, including Rose Parade Grand Marshal Lucky Carson.

Beyond its equestrian activities, the Castaic Saddle Club was committed to supporting the community.

The organization awarded a college scholarship to a William S. Hart High School senior pursuing a degree in agriculture, reflecting both the area’s rural heritage and the club’s investment in future generations.

After decades of serving the local equestrian community, the club’s activity gradually declined. It filed its final paperwork with the California Secretary of State in 1989, quietly bringing an end to a chapter of Santa Clarita Valley history.
