Users of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, reported widespread service disruptions Friday morning as thousands across the United States were unable to access the site.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, more than 77,000 reports of issues were logged at approximately 7:15 a.m. Pacific Time. Users said the app and website failed to load, instead displaying a blank screen.
The number of reported outages dropped to just over 63,000 by 7:45 a.m. PT, and by 8:25 a.m. PT, service appeared to be mostly restored, with about 5,700 reports remaining.
Many users reported difficulty loading their timelines on both the mobile app and desktop versions of the platform.
Friday’s disruption marks the second major outage for X this week. A similar issue was reported Tuesday, Jan. 13, when roughly 24,000 users experienced problems accessing the service for part of the day.
The outage also comes just days after Verizon experienced a widespread wireless service disruption across the United States, most. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, numerous Verizon customers reported their phones switching to “SOS” mode as service went down nationwide.
According to Downdetector, at least 170,000 Verizon service issues were reported around 9:45 a.m. PT.
The outage began at approximately 9:30 a.m. PT and ultimately impacted more than 1.5 million customers, making it one of the largest wireless network disruptions in the country.
In statements posted to X later that day, Verizon acknowledged the outage, saying it “let many of our customers down,” and announced plans to provide account credits to affected users. The company later confirmed impacted customers would receive a $20 credit, available through the myVerizon mobile app.
Yesterday, we did not meet the standard of excellence you expect and that we expect of ourselves. To help provide some relief to those affected, we will give you a $20 account credit that can be easily redeemed by logging into the myVerizon app. You will receive a text message…

Verizon said there is no indication the service interruption was the result of a cyberattack. Instead, the issue was attributed to a software problem that remains under investigation, according to a company statement released Thursday, Jan. 15. Verizon reported the outage was resolved after approximately seven hours.
The cause of Friday’s X outage has not yet been officially confirmed, though additional issues on other services tied to Cloudflare indicate that it may be involved.
