The Walk to End Alzheimer’s was held this Saturday in Valencia to help raise awareness about memory diseases affecting millions of Americans today.
At Bridgeport Park in Valencia, hundreds of volunteers decked in purple came out in numbers to support Santa Clarita Walk to End Alzheimers’ on Saturday.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to fight Alzheimer’s disease, which affects more than six million Americans, according to officials.
“There are now multiple FDA-approved treatments that can change the course of Alzheimer’s in a meaningful way for people in the early stages of the disease,” said one organizer. “With more potential treatments already in the pipeline awaiting approval. This is absolutely amazing progress that could be more time for those facing Alzheimer’s, more time to talk to people we love, more time to laugh together, and more time to share moments that matter.”
In California alone, more than 690,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s, with more than 1.12 million family caregivers.
This year, the event featured a Family Fun Zone, live music, free Starbucks coffee, ice cream, snacks, therapy dogs and more.
After an opening ceremony, volunteers took part in a two-mile Walk around Bridgeport Park.
On walk day, participants honored those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony – a mission-focused experience that signifies solidarity in the fight against the disease.
The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s – their personal reason to end the disease.
Money raised at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set to help the Alzheimer’s Association serve more people with dementia, their caregivers and others in the community by providing outreach education, advocacy and research.
