First Coronavirus Death Confirmed At Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital

The first coronavirus death at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has been confirmed, officials said Thursday.

The patient died of COVID-19, but Henry Mayo officials are unable to release any further details, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

Due to privacy laws, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is unable to release the age of the patient and if they had any underlying health conditions, according to the spokesperson.

This marks the second confirmed coronavirus death in the Santa Clarita Valley, after a Santa Clarita Transit bus driver succumbed to the virus last month.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has administered a total of 382 tests as of Thursday, 323 of which have returned negative, and 60 of which have returned positive, according to Moody.

17 patients are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Other health centers in the Santa Clarita Valley are also conducting coronavirus tests, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Public health officials are not releasing death or recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

  1. You know MV Transportation, it is sad that McDonalds and Wal-Mart of all corporations are offering a $2 hazard pay during this Hard time. While other may not be able to offer money they are offering TIME and FOOD in some cases, Some companies cover transportation cost for people.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES….!!!!

Larry at MV Transportation your doing an amazing job keeping the division going, THANK YOU from all of us at Div150

  2. Brother of a Nurse at HMNH

How do you report cause of death as Covid19 yet you don’t have all the facts? Reporting underlying health conditions is BS. If a patient had a serious illness prior to Covid19 and chances are they would have passed anyways Covid19 or not how do you blame COVID19 100%. Once the dust settles is the News station ready for the consequences for articles without all the facts ? Yes COVID19 is real , Yes people are sick and Yes people are dying but to publish articles without all the facts is reckless and wrong.

    • You’re saying they would have passed away anyways. Wrong. People have underlying conditions and still live their lives. After being infected by the virus, they aren’t able to fight it off. Please don’t spread stupidity.

    • 100% agree.

    • What information do you need, actually?

      • Oh I don’t know !!!!! How about more then just a number counter/tally of infected people in SCV. These reports are only causing people to be scared sh*tless due to the lack of info. I am not interested in your name, race or where you live. I just find it weird that NO ONE is reporting people recovering , current status of their illness. All we get is a tally and one guy on a cruise that was placed in isolation until he was better. Mind you he was smiling in each and every picture through out his recover. I take this serious but I do have people in my life that live in SCV who are losing their minds over this and others who aren’t really taking it serious due to lack of info. GET THE INFO OUT

    • If the hospital reported a COVID-19 related death they most likely knew enough to make that determination. They don’t owe you any more info in addition to that. What underlying health condition(s) do you have or is that private?

    • Cabin fever getting to you ? Omg calm down ….you sound so frantic and angry about a news clip….these are difficult times for a lot of US….no need to find another reason to question life as otoños ….the reporter was just doing a job…to keep us informed ….we digest it and use our own judgement to either research further or just move on;)

  3. To Anonymous Driver:

Frankly, as a resident and taxpayer I’m appalled that the City of Santa Clarita has not applied more pressure and transparency over it’s vendor MV in regard to safe and responsible transit operations. Yes, the city is now requiring the use of the back door to enter/exit the coaches – that is a little bit and the cat’s already out of the bag.

Although MV may “operate” the fleet, the coaches and fleet themselves are owned by the City of Santa Clarita and ultimately – the taxpayers!

When MV’s Texas-based spokesperson boldly proclaims that they are not going to release any more information about it’s drivers – the spokesperson must be using his own made-up and/or some sort of Texas branded governance as California regulations, reporting and disclosure requirements are much stricter and require much more public disclosure regardless of what MV believes or thinks.

As the City of Santa Clarita is ultimately responsible for operation of the transit system – the right and moral decision at this time is to shut the transit system down until a complete and thorough cleaning of all coaches is completed and stricter safeguards are put in place to protect employees from the general public.

In addition, the City must have frank discussions with Mrs. Barger’s office as the City provides transit services under contract to the unincorporated areas immediately adjacent to the City of Santa Clarita. Any decisions in regard to the continuing operation of the transit system MUST be in consultation and guidance from and with Supervisor Barger and her staff.

I’m surprised that the Teamster’s local hasn’t been up inside both MV’s and City of Santa Clarita’s anal canals in regard to the driver that has passed away and other employees who are known to be positive – and possibly ill themselves and demanding changes and/or a shutdown of the transit system.

This is a real stain on the City of Santa Clarita who bears responsibility for operating the transit system, not only for city residents but those residents living in the adjacent unincorporated county areas.

In terms of any pay increase, I would suggest you have that conversation with your union who can then discuss with MV and ultimately the City of Santa Clarita who would have to fund any increase in rates of pay. Keep in mind, the City of Santa Clarita is not a private or shareholder-run business – and tax revenues are going to drop sharply with so many retail businesses closed, and car/truck sales have all but collapsed. The city has always been conservative in managing its finances – and this storm while big- the city will be able to get through this as compared to other cities of similar size.

    • It’s called ‘hazard pay’….something doctors andr RNs do not receive, yet they are dealing with COVID on the front lines.

      • That’s because everything they deal with every day is dangerous! They’re doing their JOB! They signed up for anything that comes along! McDonalds and Walmart, though, these people never signed up for dealing with diseases and contagious health hazards!

        • Hello Lisa ,
I am a nurse and I suggest you do your research !
The truth is no one knows anything about this disease! Do you ?
we did not sign up for what could potentially be a death sentence for our immune compromised Family members that we go home to every night !

What profession do you hold ?

        • Let’s just be glad for any company that helps its employees, whoever they are. And, by the way, doctors and nurses didn’t sign up to have to work with a terrible shortage of protective equipment (I’m talking about all over the country). Our hearts should go out to them, and to the caring governors that have been scrambling and sharing, since our commander in chief hasn’t taken command.

  4. You’re saying they would have passed away anyways. Wrong. People have underlying conditions and still live their lives. After being infected by the virus, they aren’t able to fight it off. Please don’t spread stupidity.

  5. My uncle died at Henry mayo of covid and they never reported it March 8th. So they are not telling the truth

    • Sheri, I am so sorry for your loss. I know this disease was affecting people prior to the mid March such down. I wish they had a way to go back and test those who were sick and went to the doctor only to be told they had a non-flu like virus. It would probably show the real number of infected and non-infected related cases.

    • Condolences for your loss.

This is only one of the problems with this (and all KHTS articles). The headline states “First Coronavirus Death Confirmed At Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital,” then in the 3rd paragraph, it says, “This marks the second confirmed coronavirus death in the Santa Clarita Valley, after a Santa Clarita Transit bus driver succumbed to the virus last month.”

      Which is it?
