L.A. County Officials Address How ‘Safer At Home’ Impacted Coronavirus Spread

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services recently addressed how the county’s “Safer at Home” order has impacted the spread of the  COVID-19.

Because of the “Safer at Home” order, Los Angeles County hospitals were allowed time to prepare for the spread of the coronavirus, according to Dr. Christina Ghaly, Director of L.A. County Department of Health Services.

“At the beginning of L.A. County’s pandemic, the restrictions of ‘Safer At Home’ were the single best tool to stop the rapid spread of COVID-19,” Ghaly said. “Without ‘Safer At Home,’ L.A. County would have seen a disaster.”

“Safer At Home” bought L.A. Public Health time to increase testing, bed, and ventilator capacity, which contributed to why L.A. County is now seeing “low and steady” transmission rates of the virus, Ghaly added.

At an early stage in the virus, for every person infected by the virus, an additional three people would be infected in L.A .County. Today, for every person infected, only one other person is infected on average, according to Ghaly.

“If we don’t maintain a low transmission rate, we’ll start seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases within two to four weeks,” Ghaly said. “Until we have a vaccine, L.A. County will need a multi-prong approach to combat the virus. It is possible to get back to work, while keeping L.A. County residents safe.”

Ghaly expressed that Los Angeles County is set to continue the use of face coverings, physical distance and hand washing, and advised residents to stay home when sick, respect new activity and venue rules, and quarantine when advised by their healthcare provider.

“While we’re on the road to recovery, COVID-19 remains the number one cause of death and the risk of getting infected remains high,” Dr. Ghaly said. “Everyone, whether at work, visiting a business, or engaging in a permitted activity, should follow these practices to protect themselves and others.”

  1. If they would have just told everyone to wear some sort of face covering from the start out in public places and at work there would be even less of a spread and less dead. From what I see it’s still spreading and people are dying at a steady rate probably because no one is really staying home. So you might as well order the strict mask policy for people in public and at work and just open everything back up.

    • Yes Will, I agree. The cat is out of the bag. it seems like the majority want to open up at this point. I see both sides of the argument Like you said, there should be a strict mask policy that does not let people into public places without one. let’s see what happens.
