Public Health: Sports Fans In Large Crowds, Protestors Could Have Been Exposed To COVID-19

Public health officials are encouraging residents who participated in large gatherings celebrating recent sporting events or protests to get tested for COVID-19 due to potential exposure to the virus.

Those who precipitated in large crowds, including the recent protests and Lakers championship celebrations, should self-isolate for 14 days, said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“As a community, we need to keep in mind the obligations to each other, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ferrer said.

The public health director urged residents who were in the crowds to monitor themselves for potential symptoms and get tested for COVID-19 even if there are no symptoms present.

Ferrer noted the risk is even higher for infection if there were members of the crowd not wearing masks or face coverings.

In the past weeks since there were additional business re-opening, the public health director reported additional workplace outbreaks.

Employers and workers are encouraged to report any cases to the public health department.

Inspectors have been conducting checks on COVID-19 safety protocol compliance, including face coveting and social distancing requirements. About 90 percent of hair salons and personal care businesses were found to be compliant.

Gyms and places of worship were issued the largest number of citations, according to public health.

An additional 1,349 coronavirus cases have been reported in Los Angeles County Wednesday, bringing the total cases to 285,016, according to Ferrer.

An additional 22 deaths have been reported Wednesday, bringing the cumulative total in L.A. County to 6,812, according to the department.

An estimated 2,800,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Wednesday, with about 9 percent of those tests returning positive, according to public health officials.

Although Los Angeles County met the State’s metric thresholds for Tier 2 last month, L.A. County remains in Tier 1 due to the current adjusted daily case rate of 9 cases per 100,000 residents.

Per the State guidelines, to move to Tier 2, the County’s case rate needs to be 7 or fewer new cases a day per 100,000 residents for two consecutive weeks. The County’s test positivity rate is 3.7 percent which places the County in Tier 3 for this metric, according to public health.

There are 720 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday, 27 percent of which are in the ICU.

As of Wednesday, a total of 6,547 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 3,864 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 158 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country

  • 14 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • 10 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • 10 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Seven in unincorporated Sand Canyon

As of Tuesday, Oct. 13, officials had recorded 1,355 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 505 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 78 cumulative cases were confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 30 in Agua Dulce.

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Tuesday, Oct. 13, approximately 28.7 percent of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

As of Monday, Oct. 12, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 9,101 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 953 have tested positive, and four tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are 15 patients in the hospital as of Monday, while 274 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

A total of 26 COVID-19 deaths have been reported at Henry Mayo, with the Santa Clarita Valley’s total standing at least 62, according to public health officials.

  1. Likely we will see the Covid numbers rise. Thank you Rioters!!! However, the equity metric in place keeps us from ever reopening. Newsom needs to be taken to court for abuse of power. This isn’t about Corona virus.

  2. They Could have been but maybe not. Did you tell all the rioters and looters that back 6 months ago.. Hell no you didnt… they will get tested when they feel sick, just like it should be.

  3. After the Lakers WON, the rioters were too busy breaking windows, Graffitiing, punching, hurting Cops to put on masks!! What a sickening species!

  4. But the leaders have said repeatedly that the virus is woke and can pick and choose causes and that certain large-close proximity events would not be super-spreaders. You know, protests and celebrations for certain causes were OK, but no family or church gatherings which are all bad. Amazing that science has discovered this socially conscious aspect to this virus.

  5. When you say leaders, do you mean Trump? He was debating with a fever, but he always gives himself and his followers a pass on mask-wearing and gathering in groups, since he is campaigning.
