President Donald Trump had extended the deadline for all Americans, including Santa Clarita residents, to get their new REAL IDs, officials said Tuesday.
Trump announced postponing the Oct. 1 deadline during a press conference Tuesday morning.
“I’m also announcing that we’re postponing the deadline with REAL ID requirements,” Trump said during the White House event. “We will be announcing the new deadline very soon.”
Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in response to recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission. Those included increasing security for travel and creating federal standards for state-issued identification, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
REAL IDs are expected to be required to board planes and enter federal buildings, among other restrictions.

Tuesday’s announcement was made in response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Californians are under orders to stay at home as much as possible.
The director of the California DMV, Steve Gordon, said he appreciates the extension, as DMV offices can be crowded during normal times and are not ideal places for people to gather during a pandemic.
“The California DMV is encouraged by the president’s remarks indicating that the federal government will extend the enforcement date for REAL ID,” Gordon said in a statement. “This would relieve the urgency for people to visit local DMV offices and bolster the state’s efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We look forward to learning more about the president’s direction and sharing that information with the public.”
The new deadline for REAL IDs has not yet been announced. More information can be found here.
