While the wearing of masks is not mandated in the city of Santa Clarita, they are strongly encouraged during the coronavirus pandemic, said Santa Clarita City Mayor Cameron Smyth on Wednesday.
During a Wednesday morning update on the coronavirus pandemic, Smyth addressed resident concerns related to recent developments regarding personal protective equipment.
“At this point in the county of Los Angeles, it has not been mandated that the masks be worn,” Smyth said. “But we certainly strongly encourage it if you have one, and if that order changes, we will certainly let everyone know as soon as the order comes down.”
Although there is now an order in place for the city of Los Angeles mandating that masks be worn, Smyth reminded residents that this mandate does not apply to the city of Santa Clarita, which follows Los Angeles County guidelines.
“Please keep in mind that anything that is being directed for the city of Los Angeles is only within the city of Los Angeles,” he said. “Santa Clarita, from a public health standpoint, we fall under the guidelines of the County Department of Public Health.”
Smyth reminded all residents to stay safe and adhere to the “Safer at Home” order, especially in light of recent requests from Los Angeles County officials to avoid going out for groceries this week, if at all possible.
“If you don’t need to go out, don’t,” said Smyth.
Los Angeles County officials reminded residents that face coverings are not a substitute for what they termed “our most powerful tools to slow the spread of COVID-19,” which include staying home and practicing physical social distancing – staying six feet away from all people – at all times.
However, County officials noted that face coverings can help prevent the spread of infection and help save medical masks for healthcare workers or other essential workers.

I’m a dialysis patient in Santa Clarita and I’m quite surprised there is no mask policy in place for dialysis patients. Being a medical facility with blood, and us being a big risk factor (over 65 or those with underlying health problems) the thought is unsettling. I see unmasked coughing, sneezing, eating (hand to mouth), spitting in trash cans, lack of hand washing, etc. Although they have seemed to put into place new policies for employees they don’t really have any guidelines for the patients to follow
Where can masks be purchased?
I feel we should be following LA CITY. Let’s stop this virus. It begins with us!
I agree with you Pam 1000%! What is wrong with wearing a mask if it is for our own protection? Those that are asymptomatic are vectors who will transmit this disease to those who don’t have it. Scientists are not even really familiar with this virus except it is highly contagious, and it comes from the mouths and breaths straight down to your lungs. I would not wait until it gets to each of us. I will wear my mask!
Agreed! At this point the county says “County officials noted that face coverings can help prevent the spread of infection” then we should all wear them to help do our part. Even if it’s over doing it at this point, we all want no more lives to be lost, no more people sickened and to get thru this and back to our lives ASAP. Just be safe out there everyone!
Wearing a mask at the stores or when picking up food is another step in protecting all of us from getting Covid-19. Our city needs to not take a “let’s wait and see” attitude towards this virus. I have gloved and masked up several times in the past two weeks before the mandate from LA City. There were SO many people walking around in Home Depot and at a local pizza spot covering take out only that were acting like this is just another Tuesday.
It is time for people to wake to the fact that we are not living in normal time and we should be taking every precaution within reason to keeping not only ourself but our family or anyone we come in contact with safe from further spread of the virus.
I have lived long enough not to have to be told that fire is hot like a child. I will take the necessary steps to keep safe and keep the people I love safe.
What is wrong with the city ?? They should be encouraging everyone to wear them. This is for the well being of everyone.
I work in a local grocery retailer in the Santa Clarita valley. I would invite the mayor to come and work one shift in our store . I guarantee the next day he would enforce mandatory face coverings.25% of 50% of customers do not wear any protective gear whatsoever. Come on Mayor step up and protect your community.
I work in a local grocery retailer here in the Santa Clarita valley.I invite our mayor to work one shift in our store. I guarantee the next day our mayor would make it mandatory for people to wear some kind of facial coverings. 25% to 50% of our customers wear no facial coverings or rubber gloves to protect our safety. Our mayor needs to step up and protect his community
