A 5 Freeway pursuit ended in Newhall Thursday in a brief stand-off after the suspect fled when an officer noticed a traffic violation.
In the 7 a.m. hour Thursday, officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) attempted to stop a Ford Expedition near Templin Highway north of Santa Clarita for a traffic violation, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
After the driver failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, according to Greengard.
An assisting officer set up spike strips on the southbound 5 Freeway near Lyons Avenue, according to officials.
“The spike stop was successful, hitting three of the four tires,” Greengard said.
The vehicle came to a stop in the No. 1 lane.
A short stand-off occurred with the driver, prompting a full 5 Freeway closure, with southbound lanes blocked at Lyons Avenue and northbound lanes closed at Calgrove Boulevard.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody around 9 a.m.
It is unclear why the suspect fled, and what his charges will be.
