A Val Verde kidnapping suspect is being charged with five felonies after allegedly threatening to kill his girlfriend and attempting to force her into his vehicle Tuesday, officials said.
Around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to the 29600 block of Cromwell Avenue in Val Verde for a domestic violence call possibly involving a firearm, said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the female victim, who told deputies that the suspect physically assaulted (her) and threatened her life while holding a firearm,” Miller said.
The victim tried to get away, but the suspect allegedly restrained her and attempted to physically force her into his vehicle, according to Sheriff’s officials.
When deputies arrived, the suspect had reportedly fled the location.
“A crime broadcast was put out to patrol deputies with a description of the suspect and his vehicle,” Miller said.
Around 3:30 p.m., deputies made contact with the suspect when he returned to the residence on the 29600 block of Cromwell Avenue, according to Sheriff’s officials.
“A search warrant was obtained and a firearm was seized,” Miller said.
Manuel Bernal, 20, of Val Verde, was arrested on felony charges of domestic violence, assault with a firearm, kidnapping, false imprisonment and criminal threats.
The victim was treated on-scene by paramedics for her injuries, and did not require medical transport, Miller said.
Bernal was transported and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, where he is being held on $300,000 bail.
This incident is an ongoing, active investigation by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Robbery/Assault detectives, according to Miller.
