A man wanted on several felony warrants including attempted murder, and his passenger were arrested after leading the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on a high-speed pursuit Wednesday morning in Santa Clarita.
Around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, a CHP Newhall Area officer conducted a high-risk traffic stop on a reported stolen rental truck on the southbound 5 Freeway north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
The driver initially stopped, according to Burgos-Lopez.
“The officer gave commands to remove the keys and throw them into the windshield of the truck,” Burgos-Lopez said.
During the traffic stop, his passenger allegedly took the keys from the windshield area and told the driver to run, and a pursuit was initiated, according to officials.
The truck exited Lake Hughes Road, headed South on The Old Road before re-entering the southbound 5 Freeway from Parker Road.
The driver used all lanes of traffic, including the right shoulder to pass vehicles, according to officials.
At times, the high-speed chase exceeded 100 mph.
The chase came to an end when the stolen vehicle crashed into a Honda and a big rig on the southbound 5 Freeway near Calgrove Boulevard, according to Burgos-Lopez.
Anthony Johnson, 23, from Vallejo, California, was arrested for felony evading, and five felony warrants, including attempted murder out of Contra Costa County, domestic violence, false imprisonment, criminal threats and burglary.
His passenger, Nataya Gardner, 21, from Martinez, California was arrested for felony evading, according to officials.
Both suspects were transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, and are expected to be extradited back to Contra Costa County.
