Officials with Southern California Edison (SCE) are warning residents about commonly used scams.
International Fraud Awareness Week kicks off on Nov. 12 – 18th, with Utility Scam Awareness Day on Wednesday, Nov. 15th.
Scammers continue to use cutting-edge tactics to impersonate SCE and steal customer’s money, according to officials.
- Text Scams: Scammers are sending barcodes to gain access to your information. SCE is set to not text you unless you have signed up for a specific notification service or for emergency notifications.
- Phone Scams: Scammers rely on aggressive tactics and confusion created by surprise. SCE is set to never phone you to threaten disconnection and demand immediate payment.
- Email Scams: Some scammers send spam emails disguised as legitimate SCE emails with fake email addresses, logos, trademarks, website links and wording to add to the deception.
Cash apps like Zelle are widely used since money is easily transferred, especially from January 2023 to October 2023, when scammers have stolen more than $229,000 from their customers.
SCE is partnering with toll-free number administrators in order to shut down fraudulent phone numbers that ask for cash payments.
If called by a scammer, try to get a callback number and report it to the SCE Fraud by clicking here.
Just a reminder:
SCE never demands payment or credit card information over the phone
- SCE does not take prepaid Visa cards, Bitcoin or Cash apps
- SCE does not text you for payment via barcode
- SCE does not remove your meter
- SCE does not have a “Disconnection Department”
