Black Lives Matter Activists Arrested For Felony Vandalism, Community Organizes Legal Fund

Black Lives Matter activists who wrote “BLM” on a Santa Clarita street have been arrested for felony vandalism, with the community organizing a legal fund in support.

On June 19, deputies responded to a report of vandalism on the 23000 block of Cinema Drive, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Spray paint was used on the street,” Miller said.

Upon deputies’ arrival to the location, deputies observed paint on the street and individuals with white paint residue on the palms of their hands.  Deputies detained around half a dozen individuals at the scene, according to Miller.

This is still an active investigation by Career Offender, Burglary, Robbery and Assault (COBRA) detectives, according to Miller.

Quynn Lubs, 18, of Saugus, was arrested for felony vandalism, according to booking logs.

A minor was also detained in connection with the incident, according to Miller.

The cost to remove the lettering from the street is estimated to be just over $2,300, according to Carrie Lujan, spokesperson for the City of Santa Clarita.

“Due to the size of the vandalism, lane closures and traffic control had to be implemented for the safe clean up,” Lujan said. “In addition, a vactor truck had to be used to suck up the water which was used for cleaning to ensure none of the paint was washed into the storm drains and then into the Santa Clara River, which would have resulted in a storm water violation.”

Local activists dispute the claim that spray paint was used, saying it was non-toxic washable paint, according to a post in the GoFundMe to support the legal fees.

“On Juneteenth, several local Santa Clarita BLM youth activists participated in an art protest,” the post reads. “Before they could finish, local L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, confiscated the washable paint and took the kids’ information.”

Another person under the age of 18 was also arrested on July 31, according to local activists.

“Neither youth was asked to turn themselves in,” the GoFundMe post read. “Both were cuffed and arrested at their homes, with the minor while she was home alone with a friend.”

The GoFundMe is expected to go towards reimbursing the City for the removal of the paint, according to David Barlavi, the attorney representing Lubs.

Barlavi is currently working pro bono and is hoping the charges are dropped, he said.

The incident remains under active investigation as of Monday.

Ed. Note: This report has been updated to include additional information from the City of Santa Clarita on the cost of paint removal and a statement from the attorney.

Black Lives Matter Activists Arrested For Felony Vandalism, Community Organizes Legal Fund

  1. Why would people Defend Vandalism in our City. It’s clear that NO ONE Supports Antifa & BLM Violence, Looting, and Rioting and everyone is sick of it. Black LIES Don’t Matter to anyone!

  2. Black Lives matter to me. And to the vast majority of Americans. And I do not support fascists (do you, Victor?)

The paint used was WASHABLE paint, not spray paint, and the arrests came weeks after the incident (after the deputies took info and then sat on it – and they confiscated the paint, so they should know what paint it was, did they toss it?). And oddly it comes as the arrested teen has spoken out at City Council meetings about racism and police issues in Santa Clarita (KHTS, please look up previous City Council meetings).

I would suggest KHTS do their research about this case. I know that other journalists are.

  3. I support Black Lives Matter. I do not support racists or fascists. Where do you fall, Victor?

The accused was arrested nearly 10 weeks after the incident, oddly after she has spoken out numerous times at the Santa Clarita City Council meetings. Those records are publicly available.

As the deputies confiscated the materials (washable paint), I’m curious if they will produce that evidence.

  4. Let them figure out how to deal with consequences of their actions and thinking … Wouldn’t give a dime to help the ungreat full brats …2 years in the military might teach them somethings their parents should have. RESPECT ! ! ! And gratitude

    • She actually has respect and gratitude, Gary, which is why she attends City Counsel meeting, and stands up against injustice. I am quite proud of young people like her.

      • Vandalism isn’t respectful, Yvonne. I’m quite proud of our hard working deputies who followed through and will have charges against her for her disrespectful actions. SCV is a beautiful community and we would like to keep it that way.

        Bye Felicia!!

  5. *They used washable paint.* Shirley Miller represents the police and is misrepresenting these arrests by saying permanent spray paint was used. It wasn’t.

What if the message was “Cops are Cool”?

This is outrageous and I’m angry to see young people in our community treated this way for speaking their minds in a way that did zero property damage.

  6. So the sheriffs are lying? They obviously had some time to find out of it was spray paint or washables. Highly unlikely the sheriffs are making this up. I am sure there is evidence or they would not have arrested them.
And out of curiosity would it be okay for me to use washable paint on your home? I mean that’s okay according to you, right? I could paint Metallica or Les Zeplin bc I feel like it if it’s only washable any way…makes sense.

    • 1. If it is washable, I may get pissed, but I’d get over it pretty quickly because – get this – it’s washable.
      2. I would have no idea what you were trying to say if you put “Les Zeplin” in front of my house, because jibberish
      3. maybe not lying, per se, but they are exaggerating…it was washable chalk paint and not spray paint (which has a negative connotation of its own).
      4. Of course they are targeting these kids, ESPECIALLY the one who – once again – exposed City Councilman Bob Kellar to be an avowed, proud and loud racist. She made him look bad and reopened a well-worn – and true – talk track about him. She attends Council meetings and addresses the Council every meeting.
      5. This is Trump’s America…so of course BLM has them – and you – triggered.

      Good luck.

  7. Has not so much to do with what they wrote but the fact they broke the law. I will admit felony charges do seem harsh but I am guessing it’s due to a predetermined amount of damage cause (I.e. a $3,000 clean up cost which seems very realistic.)
That should be paid back plus a lot of community service hours. Not that what I find appropriate matters- that is why we have published laws and court systems to guide and decide criminal offenses and punishments.
Keep in mind a lot of people are offended by the phrase BLM bc it is not inclusive of all all humans. And it’s not that those people are against any particular race whatsoever but it is very packed with inclusivity for black lives only. No matter what any “side says” it’s just going to cause emotion. Human lives matter. And reform is necessary. Clearly we have many broken systems in our still wonderful country. Stop the race hating and start living one another again and don’t break the law no matter what or expect consequences.

  8. Vandalism is vandalism, protests do not excuse it. Black civil rights is NOT the same thing as BLM. BLM leaders freely claim they are Marxist, want to destroy the family unit so all can be raised by the tribe and be “re-educated”, they seek not only gender equality but to make gender non-existent (and the family for that matter). BLM is not about fair Black race representation in government— it is about Black sovereignty, it is about taking over the government and forcing economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression of opposition to anything not BLM (FACISM) . It is about creating a “Black Nation” that unites people all over the world according to their skin color (RACISM). Look for yourself. Learn the truth. See BlackLivesMatter.com. Their OWN website. THEIR published demands. Know who you are representing, BLM is not a romantic ideal. Educate yourself.

I believe in civil rights for everyone, especially those who are marginalized which may include women, minorities, children, poor, disabled, etc. Being part of the human existence and living together means “All Lives Matter”–don’t attempt to divide, polarize or demonize us. This country has amazing opportunities that you can work hard for and affords freedoms rarely found elsewhere–appreciate the sacrifices and progress others have made for you. Have gratitude. We can make improvements without destroying the system. Be rational. Be kind. A push for more aggressive programs and special focus for Black civil rights during these distressing times is merited. It is not merited to destroy our government, kill police or anyone you don’t agree with. We are a civilization based on morals. Our country allows lawful change, but if you use unlawful means for change, and brutalize citizens or property—you will be stopped.

  9. The GoFundMe looks to be setup by our very own David Barlavi.
Piece of work this clown is. Why does the principal of Valencia have to step down for his comments on social media when a board member of SUSD can continually assault our deputies and he’s still standing?

    • Concerned parents in SUSD would like to see Mr. Barlavi relived from the School Board. He doesn’t represent our community or our beliefs. He is divisive and promotes violence against anyone who doesn’t share his viewpoints. He is dangerously given free reign. While a outstanding principle at VHS was forced to resign. SCV is better than this!!!!!!!! We can do better. ??

  10. Civil disobedience is part of how our system works. No harm no foul. Good trouble.

  11. Are you serious with this “washable” vs “not” paint?? And so what if this person “attends” City Council meetings! Or that it took this long for action. You don’t know how the investigation was going. Vandalism is Vandalism! How’d you like your house..your street…or your car vandalized with washable paint?? Go ahead & send your address so this person has a fresh palette next time. Wake up.

    • Agree with Shelly 100%! What difference does it make whether it was ‘washable’ or not?! It’s graffiti (vandalism) and thankfully, it’s not allowed here in SCV! Idiots who (for some strange reason) want to defend it should move the hell out of here and to the city where everything is covered with the ugly, unsightly stuff! We are strictly against graffiti of ANY kind in out area, and will continue to fight to maintain that! Doesn’t matter whether the person who did it attends city council meetings or is the mayor himself! Hard to believe there are morons around here who would have the asinine audacity to support such despicable behavior! ‘Good trouble” ???? Gimme a BREAK! ?

  12. I certainly don’t want to see this, washable or non washable, because I’m not a believer. And washable or non washable it still requires clean up.
This will all go away once Biden takes office or get worse should Trump be re-elected. Making the BLM Movement a giant Race card play and bullying tactic by the violent Democrats.

  13. How can a street be defaced by paint? It’ll soon be gone via weathering. The message is the offense here.

    • We take pride in our community. You probably are not a resident since you feel graffiti messages are ok in your neighborhood. SCV has higher standards.

      • “The words of the profits are written on the subway walls”

I love urban art and “Kilroy was here”. Nothing cheers up concrete like a cartoon or a caricature. We should have designated areas. Like the concrete lined river at Sierra Highway.

There’s a lot of xenophobic irrational fear in the lily white burbs. Graffiti isn’t necessarily gang tagging. Think Banksy or Samo. Or Kilroy.

  14. Jim,
Not a good idea to endorse violence and besides, if they would happen to be black it would be looked at as racism, whether it is or not. We’re in a phase of “kiss the a$$ of the blacks” right now and everybodys participating. Gotta love the BLM.

  15. “Not inclusive of all humans.”

Do you read what you post???

Black lives are being excluded to the point that they are being killed by police for being Black and you want to whine about BLM not being inclusive? You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

Here’s my proposal…live life as a Black person…for one week. Let’s see how you do. You’ll gain enough perspective that you’ll never exert your white privilege into Black persecution again.

    BLM not inclusive…THAT’S THE POINT!

    • All races have the same opportunities, starting with free taxpayer paid pubic schools and many even get free breakfast, lunch & ? dinner along with free bus trips to & from school! Why don’t other POC, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos, Chinese, etc. constantly have these problems throughout the USA?!?! Behavior!

  16. Supporter
Here in the USA we believe(or we used to) that a person is innocent until proven guilty. The race card the the BLM has been playing is based off the ASSumption that black criminals are being killed based on the color of their skin. What I say to you or any other BLM supported is PROVE IT. Remove all assumption and show us that Floyd was killed because he was black or that Blake was shot by a Racist. BLM/Democrats have everyone brainwashed.
We all have access to the same priviledge. All that you need is money and education. White priviledge is another assumption fed by the BLM

  17. If BLM is really sincere/caring, why aren’t they marching in cities where black people are murdered by the dozens every weekend?!?!!! LE has an extremely difficult job to do, and when they encounter a career criminal that is resisting and screaming/yelling instead of talking like a normal adult, they cause escalating problems!!

  18. Quynn Lubs, needs to spend some time in jail. It would do her some good. I am sure her parents are not any better than this little brat. Too bad she is 18. I would hold the parents accountable for her actions
