Prosecutors questioned a shooting victim Thursday about the involvement of drugs in a Canyon Country murder during a preliminary hearing in San Fernando.

Michael McGlothan was held to answer in his preliminary hearing.

Michael Joe McGlothan, 53, is accused of shooting and killing Ledarion Allen, Jr., 21, and shooting McGlothan’s then-girlfriend, Shatari Shene Cooks, 32, in their Sierra Highway apartment on May 6, 2015.

Cooks, who was initially labeled a suspect by detectives,  was in court to testify against McGlothan, who was described as her boyfriend, describing the shooting and incidents surrounding the death of Allen, whom she didn’t know that well.

McGlothan had gotten involved with drugs about a month before the shooting, according to Cooks testimony. Cooks was cleared as a shooting suspect within a day or so of the incident, according to detectives.

McGlothan had even purchased a handgun for Cooks, she said, with the intention of protecting herself when he was not home. McGlothan had begun to carry the gun regularly himself as his “drug involvement” increased, she said.

When prosecutors asked Cooks to discuss the events of May 6, 2015, she described McGlothan’s demeanor as “angry” when he returned to the apartment from running errands. Cooks was in the apartment, as was Allen and two other men she didn’t know, when McGlothan approached her and grasped her by the collar where Cooks saw a gun near his waist.

When McGlothan released her, Cooks said, she escaped the apartment and crawled to the courtyard of the complex, where she heard gunshots and noticed that her own shoulder was bleeding.

Testimony is expected to continue Friday.
