Car Break-Ins Increase Amid ‘Safer At Home’ Order

Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station are offering tips for residents to prevent their vehicles from being stolen and burglarized, officials said.

Lately within the Santa Clarita Valley, Crime Prevention units have seen a spike in car burglaries, according to officials.

“When it comes to crime, most of what we’re seeing in my zone is vehicle burglaries,” said Deputy Kevin Duxbury, the crime Prevention zone leader, who oversees Stevenson Ranch. “They’re happening to cars parked on the street, or in driveways.”

Sheriff’s officials have reported that most car burglaries are happening in the late-night, and early morning hours of the day.

As a result, deputies are continuing to encourage Santa Clarita residents to follow the 9 p.m. routine.

When Santa Clarita residents go in for the night, they are being reminded to take all valuables such as garage door openers, purses, phones, wallets, computers and any other valuables out of the car, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Although your car still may be burglarized, all valuables will not be in the vehicle for the criminals to take, according to officials.

Also lately, Sheriff’s officials have seen a spike in car thefts, most commonly the Honda Civic and Accord models between the years of 1990-2005, according to Sheriff’s officials.

For Santa Clarita residents who may own these model vehicles are encouraged to purchase a club, an auto theft prevention device.

Although the Honda Civic and accords are commonly targeted, other cars are still being stolen throughout Santa Clarita, according to Sheriff’s officials.

To prevent having your vehicle stolen, Sheriff’s officials are reminding car owners to follow these prevention tips: close all the windows, lock your doors, always take your keys with you, park in well-lit areas, never leave your car running and unattended.

For Santa Clarita residents who are a victim of burglary, they are encouraged to file a police report.

Anyone who may be witnessing any kind of crime occurring, they are encouraged to call 9-1-1.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
