Case Continues For Man Accused Of Stabbing Detective In Canyon Country

The case of a Canyon Country man who is facing charges after allegedly stabbing a detective at a Jack-In-The-Box was continued Wednesday as officials work to determine the status of his mental health.

Donald Chinchilla, 23, at the time of the crime, was charged with one count of deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer in January of 2018, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Before his case began, Chinchilla was involved in an ongoing hearing to determine his mental fitness, officials said.

Who the proceedings of his court appearances Chinchilla was found incompetent to stand trial, meaning the defendant cannot rationally participate in their own defense, said Greg Risling, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office.

Deputy District Attorney Jack Garden of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section said on the morning of Jan. 8 Chinchilla allegedly confronted and stabbed a Sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot of a restaurant located in the 18900 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally inflicted great bodily injury to the victim. Additionally, the charging document alleges Chinchilla personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime.

The defendant reportedly fled the scene, the prosecutor said.

Authorities were alerted about the attack and soon after apprehended Chinchilla and took him into custody.

Chinchilla’s case is set to continue on Jan. 31 as officials work to determine his mental health status.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
