There are allegedly several fraudulent organizations posing as nonprofits to assist local police and fire departments following the Thousand Oaks shooting and Woolsey Fire in Ventura County, said the District Attorney’s Office.

In the wake of these major incidents, the Los Angeles D.A.’s Office is warning residents to look into a charity before donating.
“Unfortunately after a large incident or fire, these scams come out,” said Lt. Ignacio Somoano of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Somoano suggests residents “check out” a charity before donating, adding that if an organization is soliciting by phone, it may be a sign of a scam.
“Verify a charity is legitimate before donating, especially if you are solicited,” said Somoano.
People who want to help first responders should also beware of crooks using a uniform to con others, said D.A.’s Officials.
Further, some charities spend most of their donations on administrative costs or don’t use the funds the way they promised. Others may not be legitimate charities at all, officials said.
Just because an organization has “police” or “firefighter” in its name, doesn’t mean that it actually will use the money to assist these public servants, said the District Attorney’s Office.
