District Attorney Warns L.A. Citizens Of COVID-19 Stimulus Check Fraud

The District Attorney of Los Angeles County is warning local residents, including those in Santa Clarita, of scammers offering fraudulent early COVID-19 stimulus checks.

In a post released December 30th from the District Attorney’s Office of Los Angeles County, community members are warned to avoid text messages or emails offering to send early federal stimulus money by check or direct deposit.

In an earlier statement relating to the COVID-19 economic impact payments, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said:

Scammers may try to get you to sign over your check to them or get you to “verify” your filing information in order to steal your money. Your personal information could then be used to file false tax returns in an identity theft scheme. Because of this, everyone receiving a COVID-19 economic impact payment is at risk.”

In the Stimulus Check Scam, con artists target their victims with the promise of sending a quick stimulus check disbursement by impersonating various roles such as popular retailers, officials said.

These crooks then ask for an upfront payment to “allow you” to receive the aid or attempt to steal more personal information by pretending to require your Social Security number, bank account or credit card details to receive the payment, according to LADA officials.

The District Attorney’s Office is reminding every citizen of Los Angeles County, including those in Santa Clarita, to not pay any fees to receive government aid, give away your Social Security number, credit card or bank account information.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, the D.A. asks that you contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/complaint.
