Drunk Driver Arrested After Causing 5 Freeway Crash With Charter Bus Transporting Middle Schoolers

A drunk driver was arrested after allegedly causing a multi-vehicle 5 Freeway crash involving a charter bus transporting nearly two dozen middle school students Sunday evening.

Around  10 p.m. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers received reports of a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound 5 Freeway, south of Vista Del Lago Road, north of Castaic, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“Initial reports indicated a pickup truck had been involved in a crash with a charter bus and an additional vehicle,” Burgos-Lopez said. “Upon officers’ arrival on scene, they discovered a charter bus with 22 middle school passengers and eight teachers/chaperons, a Green Toyota Tundra, and a White Kia had all been involved in the crash.”

The driver of the Kia was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital for their injuries in the 5 Freeway crash. The occupants of the charter bus did not report any injuries at the time of the crash investigation.

Officers contacted one of the drivers on scene and conducted a DUI investigation.

Jose Lopez Valdez, 29, from Anaheim, was ultimately arrested for felony DUI causing injury.

Lopez Valdez was booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
