DUI Suspect Runs Over CHP Officer, Arrested At Unrelated 14 Freeway Closure

A man was arrested at a road closure on the 14 Freeway, after California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers recognized him as the DUI suspect who ran over one of their colleagues during a DUI investigation hours earlier.

Around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, CHP units received a call of a possible DUI driver on the eastbound 210 Freeway east of the 5 Freeway, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“A unit located the vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma, and ultimately made an enforcement stop on the vehicle, on Yarnell Avenue, off the eastbound 210,” Burgos-Lopez said. “Upon making the stop, an additional officer arrived as a secondary unit. Officers approached the vehicle and contacted the driver. After contacting the driver, officers requested the driver to exit the vehicle.”

However, The driver started the vehicle, and both officers attempted to prevent the driver from fleeing, according to officials.

“The driver was able to get the vehicle into gear and began accelerating away from the scene,” Burgos-Lopez said. “Both officers fell from the vehicle, as one of the officers fell, he was run over.”

Both officers returned to their patrol vehicles and attempted to pursue the driver, according to officials.

However, pursuing officers lost sight of the suspect.

The officer who was run over was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital for his injuries.

Around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, the suspect was headed northbound on the 14 Freeway, and came upon a crash that was under investigation by CHP officers.

The investigating officers closed down all lanes, and were able to successfully arrest the wanted man.

The injured CHP officer was released from the hospital.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
