A fatal deputy-involved shooting in Valencia Thursday afternoon has prompted multiple investigations, officials said Friday.
“The suspect was struck at least twice in the torso area,” said Lt. Brandon Dean with the Homicide Bureau in a press conference Thursday.
Around 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 25700 block of Rye Canyon Road regarding a suspicious person described as a Hispanic male.
When the deputy arrived, he made contact with the suspect, who in turn, reportedly began to fight with the deputy, according to investigators.
“The lone deputy attempted to make contact with the individual,” Dean said. “The suspect attacked the deputy. A fight ensued, and during the altercation, the suspect was able to get a hold of our deputy’s radio and taser.”
The deputy was able to return to his patrol car and use the vehicle radio to broadcast that he needed assistance, according to Dean.

Additional deputies responded to the location and attempted to make contact with the suspect, according to officials.
“As soon as (backup) arrived on scene, the suspect charged at deputies with a wooden stake,” Dean said.
The suspect was then shot at least twice, and died as a result of his injuries, Dean said. One deputy was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sheriff’s officials
Following the shooting, multiple investigations were launched, including separate investigations by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.
Immediately after a deputy-involved shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department notifies the Office of the Inspector General, who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process, according to officials.
Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.
Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Justice System Integrity Division then conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
Each deputy-involved shooting works on a case-by-case basis; however, the deputy is generally given one week of leave from work, according to Dean.
“After a deputy is involved in a shooting, they have two appointments with our psych doctors before they can return to the field,” Dean said.
Even when a shooting is considered justified, it can be very traumatic for the deputy, Dean added.
The deputy-involved shooting in Valencia is still under investigation as of Friday afternoon.

Oh my, my, my.
His name was Alvaro Venegas, he was schizophrenic and severely depressed. If the department had training on how to deal with suspects with mental illness why did they have to shoot to kill. Why not aim for the leg or use their taser?
Not sure if they have training on how to deal with those with mental illness, but they have to act on a split-second basis when someone comes after them with a wooden stake. Then again, who knows what really happened. After all, this comes from KHTS, and we all know how inaccurate they can be.
