Fatal Hit-And-Run Suspect Arrested In Sand Canyon

A driver wanted in a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle rider was arrested in Sand Canyon Wednesday evening.

Just before 6 p.m. Wednesday, first responders received reports of a traffic collision on Big Tujunga Canyon Road near mile marker 7.79 in Tujunga, said Officer Jonathan Boyd, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Altadena Office.

“We got word that it involved a motorcycle rider,” Boyd said.

The motorcycle rider was on a black Yamaha bike heading southbound on Big Tujunga and collided with a gray Ford Maverick on the northbound side of the road, according to preliminary reports.

“The motorcycle rider was ejected and had major injuries they later succumbed to,” Boyd said.

The driver of the Ford fled the location, and was believed to be near Sand and Placerita Canyon Roads around 7 p.m. when the suspect vehicle was discovered in a neighborhood in that area, according to officials.

With the assistance of a helicopter and officers from the CHP Newhall Area Office, the driver of the crash was located and taken into police custody.

As of the publication of this article, the identity of the suspect and motorcycle rider have not been released.

Anyone with information about this crash is encouraged to contact the Altadena CHP Office at 626-296-8100.

  1. Actually the suspect was found by a citizen listening to the local scanner and called the suspicious person in to the sheriff department. Helicopter and cruisers were looking in wrong area.

    • Wow! That is good someone was listening to the reports. I was on Tujunga that day and seen the truck speeding down the hill southbound with major windshield damage and driver side damage. Yes, there were other people who called it in and I did as well.

  2. Thank you Alex (and to the others) who called this in. It’s horrible that someone would run away from the scene and not call for help.

  3. Sadly no follow up on who was arrested for this fatality. Hope some follow up will happen on this.
    Other local media same scenario.

  4. Anyone have the name of the driver yet?

  5. The story needs a follow up. Some was killed and someone was arrested for doing it.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
