As Independence Day approaches, the City of Santa Clarita is reminding residents that all fireworks are illegal within city limits, including those labeled “Safe.”
Each year, thousands of people, including children, suffer burns, injuries or permanent disfigurement due to fireworks, according to the City of Santa Clarita.
Additionally, fireworks cause fires that result in millions of dollars in property damage nationwide.
“We’re taking every opportunity to inform the public that even ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks are illegal in Santa Clarita,” said Robert Jensen, Public Information Officer with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Every year, people get seriously injured, and we’re doing everything we can to prevent that. There will be increased patrols looking for illegal fireworks. We also want to stress the importance of not calling 911 to report fireworks, please take photos and report them online instead. It’s a very dry fire season, and we’re aware of the reports that come in. We’re asking the community to help us by staying vigilant and reporting activity through the proper channels.”
What Counts as a Firework in Santa Clarita?
Under city law, any item that explodes, rises into the air, or moves on the ground is considered illegal.
This includes:
- Large bottle rockets
- Roman candles
- Firecrackers
- Chasers
- Sparklers longer than 10 inches or wider than a quarter inch
Even “Safe and Sane” fireworks that are legal in other California cities are not allowed in Santa Clarita.
However, small novelty items like snapper or popper kits sold in some supermarkets are permitted. These have been cleared by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the federal government. Adult supervision is still strongly recommended.
