After a successful PIT maneuver Friday morning, a high-speed pursuit suspect was found hiding in a trash can in Newhall.
Around 8:10 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area units responded to a broadcast call of reckless driving activity involving three vehicles on the southbound 5 Freeway passing Pyramid Lake, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
“CHP Newhall units located a Dodge charger on the I-5 southbound at Lake Hughes road,” Greengard said. “The Dodge was using all lanes of traffic with speeds ranging up to 100 mph.”
CHP units attempted to initiate an enforcement stop, but the Dodge failed to yield to the units, at which point the pursuit was initiated.
“As the pursuit neared Pico Canyon, the Dodge slowed due to traffic, and the units took the opportunity to conduct the PIT,” Greengard said.
The pursuit intervention technique, known as the PIT maneuver, is when law enforcement uses their car to spin a fleeing suspect vehicle around, disabling the engine.
“The Dodge spun out into the dirt shoulder of the Lyons Avenue off-ramp,” Greengard said. “The driver took foot bail and ran from the scene.”
CHP units were able to locate and apprehend the driver who jumped into a trash can at a restaurant.
“The Dodge was an outstanding stolen vehicle,” Greengard said.
The driver was arrested for felony evading and grand theft auto, according to Greengard.

Lol the trash took it self out 😉
First, the PIT maneuver does not disable the engine of the car. Second, lock this A-hole up for about ten years to let him ponder his (I’m guessing that the driver was a male) life’s decisions.
PIT does generally kill the engine in the spin-out. Watch COPS re-runs to see how this plays out: The vehicles stop where they spin, stalling the engine. They also often collide with objects, lose contact with pavement, and/or overturn.
Secondly, This is USA and judges determine and impose sentences. Not Dennis the Menace ignoranus opinions about it.
Clearly a misdemeanor! Release this young mad immediately, he can’t breathe! Also, I need some more of that sweet, sweet, smash & grab mall booty.
