A man who allegedly re-entered the country illegally was arrested for possibly attempting to pour gasoline on his son and set him on fire last month.
Around 11:20 p.m. Saturday, May 3, deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call on the 24800 block of Railroad Avenue in Newhall, said Deputy Robert Jensen, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“A father attempted to pour gasoline on his son and property,” Jensen said. “The suspect had a lighter and tried to (ignite) them.”
The suspect fled the location before deputies arrived on scene.
After investigating the incident, deputies located Miguel Chavez Gradilla, 63, a transient, on Thursday, May 29, and arrested him for attempted murder, according to Jensen.
When Gradilla appeared in state court this week, he was charged with two counts of felony criminal threats, one count of assault with chemicals and one count of disobeying a protective order, according to court documents.
Gradilla is due in court on June 12 for a preliminary hearing.
He is also being charged in federal court with one count of illegally reentering the country, said Ciaran McEvoy, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice.

Hand over to ICE and they should process him for deportation.
One of the most horrific crime ever. What is wrong with people?
Send them to CECOT.
Obviously transient homeless with mental issues. Article is misleading, makes it seem like he came into the country inordinate to commit this crime. It conveniently does not state when he came back in. Should all articles with crimes state “citizen….” I’m sure you’d see at least 10,00% more of those than “illegal immigrant ….”. Click bait. Let’s start all articles with “Convictes Felon President ….” lol. Yeah. Tooting to it’s readers base. … lol..
If these individuals are just deported and serve no time for their crime, then justice has not been served. This is a perfect example of needing a facility like Guantanamo. A place where these criminals can be punished and then sent home with the knowledge that if they come back, they will be immediately sent back to Gitmo and it won’t be a picnic. Make it painful so they never want to come back.
The real criminals are those that hire them. Like the big farmers (republican), meat packers, etc, etc. etc…those CEO’s should be thrown in jail for truly being criminal. And you’d have to go pick lettuce or pay $10 a head. Who does your house cleaning and gardening? Hypocrites, far more crimes are committed by citizens than immigrants. Immigrants come here to work, who do you see begging for money on the freeway exits and streets? Not immigrants. They pay more taxes than the top 1% earners Mr. TACO hasn’t paid taxes in how many decades, but he’s the king of grift. There’s more tax evaders in SCV than non documented immigrants in the entire country that dont pay taxes. … and the worse tax evaders are right leaning. The ones that stole money from the covid relief were mostly republicans. The poorest states are republican, the most on social aid are republican areas. So..who’s the real criminal?
