Deputies arrested a man Tuesday after he allegedly stole a sandwich from Nealie’s Skillet in Valencia in an attempt to “dine and dash” and gave false information to a peace officer, officials said.
Around 9 a.m., deputies responded to Nealie’s Skillet on Tournament Road regarding a report of “defrauding an innkeeper,” said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“The suspect, a male adult, entered the location, ordered and ate a sandwich,” Miller said.
When the bill came, he allegedly exited the location without making any attempt to pay, Miller said.
When deputies made contact with the suspect, he reportedly told them his name was Jay Matthews, but his legal name is actually Richie Gagaan, Miller said.
Gagaan, 30, a transient, had an existing warrant, and was arrested on charges of defrauding an innkeeper and providing false information to peace officers, both misdemeanors.
Gaagan was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with bail set at $500, according to arrest records.

Wow… obviously the man was hungry enough to try to pull off such an immoral act of ordering a sandwich knowing he could not pay for it. I am disgusted the way my peers appropriate the level of service I receive based solely on my appearance. I am to a certain extent embarrassed that I have had meals from local dumpsters. I never thought that I would/could eat from a container intended for rubbish I know for a fact that restaurants, convenience & liquor stores, thrift stores, even adult shops would rather throw away food and useful items off to the dump, than offer good food to a hungry fellow human being. Funny thing is, Santa Clarita is the second City in California with the most debt such a fact is using to me, because, as I am looked down upon for not not ever having a car payment, or credit card, mind you a mortgage payment, I do not fall into the at category of debt. What I do know is how to live without electricity, running water which includes a flush toilet, all because I wanted to teach my son ways of being independent of the masses. I want the hard working, privileged, to know, we were once like you, and some have never had the chance to be like you.
Living without running water, indoor plumbing or electricity is not a “life lesson” your son needs to learn; why should he suffer because of your poor life choices? One can easily impart practical life lessons intended to teach self-sufficiency, responsibility and empathy towards others without causing needless deprivation to a child. Your false equivalency of hard working and privileged is grossly misstated, some of the hardest working people I know are neither “privileged” nor debt ridden. Oh and they work hard to provide the basic necessities for their children such as a roof over their head, running water, electricity and food (not from a dumpster). There is no nobility in poverty; there is much however in doing a decent days work, contributing to your community and living a productive/sustainable life.
Tyla, Whole Foods started a program to feed the hungry. One of the hungry would rather have money instead and sued Whole Foods claiming the food made him sick, this is why restaurants throw their food away.
