A mother was arrested after her child allegedly fell out of a moving vehicle Saturday, and was fatally struck by several vehicles, CHP officials said in an update Wednesday

The 7-year-old victim is believed to have fallen out of a 1999 Lincoln Navigator on the northbound 5 Freeway near Weldon Canyon Road, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Office.

“After initial investigations it was determined the 7-year-old female child fell out of the moving 1999 Lincoln navigator through an open window, and as a result, sustained fatal injuries,” read a CHP report of the incident.

The child’s mother, Veronda Gladney, 28, of Lancaster, and her boyfriend, Michael Branch, 39, of Hawthorne, were both arrested on charges of felony cruelty to a child.

“(A) 911 caller reported they had struck an unknown stationary object, which was blocking the roadway on I-5 N/B Golden State Freeway at Weldon Canyon Road,” Greengard said. “CHP Newhall Area Officers arrived on scene to investigate the incident. It was determined that the unknown object was a child who had been struck by several vehicles.”

The 7-year-old’s identity is still being withheld, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

The fatality is still actively being investigated and anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Newhall rea Office at (661) 600-1600.
