Multiple shell casings were found a short distance from where a person was murdered in Newhall Monday night, however, it is unclear if the two shootings are related.

Around 8 p.m. Monday, deputies received reports of an illegal shooting on the 25000 block of Walnut Street in Newhall, said Deputy Robert Jensen, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Upon arrival, deputies discovered seven 40mm spent casings near the scene. A shattered window at the location showed evidence of bullet impacts, though no injuries were reported,” Jensen said.

The illegal shooting occurred approximately 30 minutes after a person was shot and killed on Lyons Avenue just west of Newhall Avenue.

As of Tuesday morning, it is unknown if the two shooting are related.

The suspects in both shooting remain at large.

Detectives with the Juvenile and Gang Team are investigating both incidents.

This is the second illegal shooting to take place on Walnut Street within the last week.

On Monday June 10, deputies responded to 16th and Walnut Streets for a reported illegal shooting.
