An Oceanside man was arrested Monday after Santa Clarita deputies discovered him driving with a bag of narcotics within reach while in possession of a loaded gun.

On Monday, a deputy patrolling Newhall observed a vehicle driving around with both license plates missing near the intersection of Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway, according to Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“As the deputy contacted the driver to warn/cite him, he observed a plastic baggie containing narcotics within the male’s reach,” Arriaga said. “During a search of his car, deputies additionally found a plastic bag containing approximately a quarter pound of hallucinogenic mushrooms and a loaded revolver.”

The man was ultimately arrested for possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm and other narcotics charges.

50-year-old Clifton Koehler, a resident of Oceanside, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm and two charges of possession of a controlled substance, Arriaga said.

Koehler was subsequently released on citation and is scheduled to appear in court in several months.
