Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested two individuals Thursday morning in the Grapevine for transporting over 100 pounds of marijuana, officials said.

Just after midnight Thursday, two CHP Newhall Area officers stopped a 2019 Toyota Sequoia on the 5 Freeway near Templin Highway for a suspected impaired driver, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the office.

“Upon their approach, they smelled an overwhelming odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle,” Greengard said.

Upon further investigation, both the driver and passenger were arrested for transportation of over 100 lbs of marijuana, according to CHP officials.

The street value of the marijuana is worth at least $100,000, according to officials.

The two suspects, one from La Cresenta and the other from Burbank, were arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail on felony drug transportation charges, according to officials.
