Miguel Hernandez, 39, was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14 following a traffic stop made by a deputy with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, said Lt. David Smith the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
The man’s vehicle matched the description from an “assault with a deadly weapon” call the day before in the Newhall area, said said Sgt. Bob Boese with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
fHernandez is a “known local gang member,” said Lt. Eddie Hernandez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.
The shooting incident occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14 near the intersection of Shangri-La Drive and Nathan Hill Drive.
After the suspect was pulled over, he got out of his vehicle, and proceeded to yell profanities at the deputy and appeared to challenge him to a fight, Boese said.
The deputy gave several commands to the suspect to put his hands in the air, however the driver refused to comply.
The deputy continued to give commands to the individual, but the suspect “ignored all commands, turned his body and aggressively reached behind his back appearing to retrieve a weapon, and began to draw the (suspected) weapon on the deputy. At this point, a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” according to a news release by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A male adult was a passenger in the vehicle and was interviewed by detectives. Hernandez said detectives have “talked to all of the witnesses that have come forward.”
Hernandez added that detectives are still working to identify “whether or not there is a connection to a road rage incident that took place on Jan. 13.”
Officials said a knife was recovered at the scene.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are investigating the incident and no further information is available at this time.
