Phone scams in Santa Clarita and throughout Los Angeles County have prompted officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to issue a warning about scammers posing as government officials.

The perpetrators allegedly pose as government agencies as part of an extortion scam, said LASD officials. The caller in these cases will typically demand payment and threaten the victim with some sort of legal action (arrest them or disrupt services) if the payment is not made.
The caller will then instruct the victim to get a money order, conduct a wire transfer or purchase some type of gift card to “pay the fine.”
Sheriff’s officials warned that neither the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department nor any other government agency has a policy of calling to solicit money for fines.
