Santa Clarita Basketball Coach Sentenced To 9 Years For Sexual Battery, Lewd Acts On A Child

A Santa Clarita basketball coach was sentenced Wednesday after pleading no contest to multiple sex abuse charges in May, officials said.

Jeremy Haggerty, 34, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading no contest to six counts of lewd acts on a child and three counts of sexual battery, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Haggerty also must register as a sex offender for life, according to D.A.’s office officials.

“Over the course of nearly a decade, Haggerty is accused of sexually assaulting eight victims who ranged in age between 14 and 17 years old,” according to district attorney officials.

The youth basketball coach worked for or trained a number of high school teams and young players across the Santa Clarita Valley.

Haggerty’s trial came after being arrested by the Special Victims Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 13, 2018.

In August of 2018, officials with the LA County Special Victims Unit confirmed that they were investigating a former basketball coach from Trinity Classical Academy.

In an interview with KHTS at the time, Wally Caddow, managing director at Trinity Classical Academy, stated the alleged incident occurred during a private transaction — not on school grounds while the coach was still acting varsity basketball coach.

Haggerty originally played basketball for Canyon High School until he graduated in 2002. He was inducted into the Canyon High School Boys Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

He continued to play basketball at Eastern Arizona Junior College before accepting a scholarship to play basketball at The Master’s University (then The Master’s College). Haggerty also played for two professional tour teams in Taiwan and Italy.

According to his most recent “coach’s biography” that was found on the Valencia High School basketball website, Haggerty either coached or assisted at: Canyon High School, Golden Valley High School, Renaissance Academy, Saugus High School, Trinity Classical Academy, Valencia High School and West Ranch High School.

  1. Only 9 years jail time for ruining a child’s life? Incredible!

  2. I know everybody knew he was messing with a 14 year old girl for years before he started with the boys.
