Six Arrested After Deputies Find Nitrous Oxide During Late-Night Patrol In Newhall

Six people, including five teens, were taken into custody early Sunday morning after sheriff’s deputies discovered nitrous oxide inside a parked car in Newhall.

Just after midnight, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were doing a routine patrol check in the 22300 block of Needham Ranch Parkway in Newhall when they noticed several people sitting inside a parked car. Sheriff officials say because of the late hour and out of an abundance of caution, deputies decided to stop and check on the vehicle.

Once they made contact, deputies found six males inside the vehicle. Authorities said three were 18 years old, one was 20, and two were 16 years old.

Deputies then noticed a large nitrous oxide tank inside the vehicle, along with multiple balloons scattered throughout the car. Investigators determined the group was using the tank to fill the balloons and inhale the gas.

All six occupants were arrested on misdemeanor charges related to possession of nitrous oxide, according to officials.

The four adults were from Sylmar, Palmdale, Newhall and Canyon Country, while the two juveniles were from Newhall and Canyon Country.

“Nitrous oxide can seriously harm teens, sometimes permanently. This is a reminder for parents to check in with your teens, have open conversations, and know who they’re spending time with. Let’s work together to keep them safe!” said the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
