A high-speed pursuit involving two vehicles that passed through Santa Clarita at over 100 mph led to one of the suspects crashing on Wednesday morning near Soledad Canyon.
Around 2 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) observed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed on the northbound 14 Freeway near Sand Canyon Road, prompting a pursuit, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
“A Dodge Charger and a Jeep SUV, were both traveling over 100 mph. CHP officers accelerated up to both vehicles and initiated an enforcement stop, at which time both vehicles failed to stop,” Greengard said.
A pursuit was initiated and continued northbound on the 14 Freeway, where both vehicles exited at Soledad Canyon Road in Acton, Greengard said.
“The Jeep failed to negotiate the off ramp and crashed into the guardrail. The Dodge Charger continued fleeing,” said Greengard.
Due to the vehicle crashing, CHP officers stopped the chase to render aid to the driver of the Jeep before taking him into custody, Greengard added.
Additional CHP officers arrived on scene and located the Dodge Charger abandoned, Greengard said.
Driver Arrested
Jonathan Perez, 18, from Los Angeles, was arrested for felony evading in connection with the high-speed pursuit, Greengard added.
Perez was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station with bail set at $75,000, according to arrest records.
