Unlicensed Teenager Arrested After 100 MPH Pursuit Through 5 Freeway

An unlicensed teenager was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly leading law enforcement officials on a pursuit from North Hollywood through the I-5 Freeway in Santa Clarita at speeds of over 100 mph.

Early Tuesday morning, officials with the Los Angeles Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop in North Hollywood, according to Officer Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Office.

“The subject failed to yield,” Greengard said. “A pursuit was initiated on surface streets.”

LAPD officers pursued the driver, alleged to be 18-year-old Cameron Newby of Oakland, until he reached the I-405 Freeway. At that point, officers with West Valley CHP took over the pursuit, followed by CHP Newhall officers once the driver reached the 5 Freeway at the 210 Freeway, according to Greengard.

“Throughout the pursuit reckless driving and over 100 mph took place,” he added. “The driver also failed to stop at multiple red stoplights, blowing through them at high speeds and without due regard for public safety.”

The pursuit continued northbound to approximately Quail Lake Road, where officers with the CHP Newhall Office were able to successfully stop the vehicle using spike strips at around 4:15 a.m.

“The vehicle stopped in the number one lane,” Greengard said. “All occupants surrendered.”

Newby was taken into custody and booked on felony charges of evading a peace officer, as well as charges for driving without a license. His bail was set at $75,000.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

  1. Let’s see…the kid perp is from Oakland….that tells you a lot right there… if it’s the same Cameron Newby, he was busted for robbery on March 31, 2020…nice way to start adulthood…in the hood!

    Good job CHP and LAPD!!

  2. As usual, Michael Brown grabs a big headline “ Unlicensed TEENager”— The bad man is a adult, 18 !!
    We’re they gangbangers?

    • Who cares if they were gangbangers? Focus instead on 100+mph and the threat they imposed on other drivers. The headline could read “thoughtless teenager endangers hundreds of others, including law enforcement on freeway simply because he didn’t have a license”? Impound the vehicle for 30 days, don’t allow him a license until he’s 21 and make him serve at least 6 months for this incident. #lessonlearned

  3. Tender minded Greg— gangbangers get together to create all types of mayhem in gangs to steal & break all types of laws! Not a TEENager, he is an adult, 18! Glad it was caught before more lawbreaking could occur!!
