A Valencia man was arrested on a slew of felony charges after he barricaded himself inside a private charter bus in Stevenson Ranch following a failed attempt to steal it Thursday.
Around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to the Fairfield Inn on the 25300 block of The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch regarding an attempted robbery, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Upon arrival, deputies learned a male adult was attempting to take a bus,” Arriaga said.
When deputies arrived they observed a man, 69-year-old Mark Jenkins of Valencia, matching the suspect description seated in the driver’s seat of the unoccupied bus, Arriaga said.
“While speaking with the suspect, deputies observed signs similar to someone under the influence of alcohol,” Arriaga said.
After deputies gave several verbal commands to Jenkins, he eventually complied and exited the bus without incident.
After he exited the bus, deputies were able to continue their investigation into what led up to the attempted carjacking of the bus, according to Arriaga.
Prior to Jenkins entering the bus, he allegedly attempted to steal a car nearby belonging to a woman, Arriaga said.

After he was unable to gain access to the vehicle, Jenkins then allegedly attempted to take her purse, according to officials on scene.
“The suspect attempted to forcefully take the victim’s property from her possession,” Arriaga said. “A brief struggle ensued, however the victim was able to run away from the suspect.”
Jenkins then reportedly boarded the bus following the encounter with the woman.
“(He) actually entered the bus, assaulted the driver and attempted to carjack him,” said Captain Justin Diez, for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at the time of the crime.
After Jenkins exited the bus, he was arrested and charged with felony counts of carjacking, attempt carjacking, attempted robbery and a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication, Arriaga added.
Jenkins was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with bail set at $100,000, according to arrest records.
