A Valencia theft suspect has been taken into custody Thursday afternoon after allegedly stealing $60 in cash from an off-duty officer’s wallet, officials said.

Around 12:05 p.m., deputies received reports of a petty theft near Harbor Freight Tools on Valencia Boulevard, said Sgt. Joel Nebel with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“An off-duty peace officer dropped his wallet, and a bad guy stole $60 and threw the wallet,” Nebel said.

The suspect fled the scene after the off-duty officer attempted to detain him, according to officials.

A brief containment was set up while deputies searched for the suspect, according to officials.

The suspect was found hiding in the wash just north of Magic Mountain Parkway near the car dealerships, where he was taken into custody, officials said.
