Deputy Who Was Kidnap Victim Dies

Sheriff’s Deputy Timothy White, who worked at Pitchess Detention Center, died suddenly April 1 of an apparent pulmonary embolism, his stepfather, Roger Gitlin, told the Associated Press. White was buried Thursday at Eternal Valley.

White was one of the victims in an infamous kidnapping 30 years ago when he was taken in Ukiah by child molester Kenneth Parnell. He escaped two weeks later with fellow kidnap victim Steven Stayner, who was 14 at the time and had been held captive for seven years.

The pair hitchhiked to safety. The story was later the subject of the movie “I Know My Name Is Steven.”

White was the last survivor of the incident; Parnell died in prison in 2009; Stayner died in a 1989 motorcycle crash.

Deputy White lived in Pine Mountain with his wife Dena and two children. He is also survived by his mother, father and sister.
