The kitchen’s facelift was part of thousands of dollars of donated work by the family-owned Santa Clarita company, and the Zonta Club also helped.

“Heter Family Woodworking offers free basic home maintenance service to local single moms throughout the year,” said Brendie Heter. “I contacted Linda in the spring to see if they needed anything. She said their kitchen was in bad shape and Noah and I committed to helping any way we could.”

Noah Heter assessed the kitchen remodel and they agreed to donate the labor entirely, but the materials would be $2,500.

“I completed a visual inspection and found the cabinets themselves were structurally sound,” Noah Heter said. “However, the cabinet doors, drawer boxes, hinges and glides were old and not working properly. Some were broken completely and the space needed a facelift.”

DVC Executive Director Linda Davies received a grant from the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley for the cost. However, without Linda knowing, the Heters privately fundraised the entire material cost in less than a week.

While the work was being done, volunteers from the nonprofit feedSCV put together healthy, low-cost meals to help the shelter’s clients out.

The Zonta Club of SCV, which is a partner and big supporters of the DVC, still agreed to chip in $1,000 for any additional housework, after Davies let them know the money had been raised.

Heter Family Woodworking sanded down the wood face frame, installed new cabinet doors, drawers and all new hardware, and then painted the kitchen.

The repairs and renovation uncovered a problem the Domestic Violence Center staff didn’t even know about.

“During the renovation,” Heter said, “we found termite damage in the kitchen. Thankfully, I’m additionally a licensed termite inspector and we were able to get all supplies needed to treat the damage donated by Nordhagen & Daughters. This was truly a community effort.”

DVC officials were extremely grateful for the work.

“The kitchen is a place where so many meaningful conversations take place,” said Linda Davies, executive director of the Domestic Violence Center, who’s also watched the shelter help countless “survivors become thrivers,” which is the goal of DVC staff. “And, more importantly,” Davies added, “the people who stay there, are going to feel cared for.”
