OPINION: Courthouse Proposal More Than Bad Planning, It’s Civic Malpractice — Crystal Riley — November 20, 2025

The proposed eight-story courthouse in the heart of Valencia isn’t just bad planning — it’s an act of civic malpractice.

Whoever decided that the middle of our premier retail and family district should house a criminal-processing complex clearly hasn’t spent more than 20 minutes in this city. They’re about to drop a 278,000-square-foot industrial monolith into an area built for restaurants, families, and commerce. It’s stupidity disguised as modernization. Santa Clarita has spent decades doing what most California cities can’t: building a safe, desirable, high-value community. And now Sacramento wants to blow a crater in the center of it.

The economic impact alone should disqualify this plan. You don’t place a regional courthouse serving half of Los Angeles County next to your most valuable retail zone unless you’ve completely surrendered the idea of responsible governance. This building won’t bring revenue, foot traffic, or opportunity — it brings defendants, in-custody transports, loitering, and the slow decay that always follows major justice centers. Ask Van Nuys. Ask Long Beach. This is how you turn a thriving district into a strip of bail-bond offices and lawyer billboards. Homeowners didn’t spend their life savings to live next to a processing hub for crime.

Santa Clarita needs a new courthouse, but we don’t need it BEFORE we need a modern HOSPITAL. And we don’t need an oversized, industrial justice factory jammed between neighborhoods and the mall. This is the wrong project in the WORST possible location, and pretending otherwise insults the intelligence of every resident who built this community.

The fact that this plan made it out of committee is a sign of how broken the process has become. Move the courthouse — somewhere it belongs. Valencia is not your dumping ground.
