For first-time college students, there can be many uncertainties and unknowns when starting the journey of higher education.

Tuition, fees, transportation, and navigating the process can be very confusing and frustrating, sometimes even deterring the pursuit at all.

At College of the Canyons (COC), caring professionals are working every day to make those barriers to higher education disappear. That’s why Canyons Promise was founded, a scholarship and assistance program for first-time college students.

In a recent interview with KHTS Hometown Station Morning Show, Lisa Raigosa from Canyons Promise explained just who can apply for this amazing program and how it works to encourage learners to explore higher education.

The Canyons Promise main goal is to clear the path for people who want to work towards a college degree, but might have been prevented from doing so by their circumstances. Canyons Promise seeks to foresee and evaluate every barrier, devising a plan to help potential students overcome those would-be blockades.

The Canyons Promise first and foremost provides its members with tuition and fee-free education for up to two years, removing the financial barrier keeping people from pursuing higher education.

It also can provide many other resources for students, such as free parking passes, Santa Clarita city bus passes, priority enrollment, one-on-one counseling to help navigate college, and more.

This program is designed for first-time college students, but their requirements are very accepting within that category.

To apply for Canyons Promise, you must be a first-time college student and California resident or AB 540 eligible. It’s that simple! Students can be adults seeking a career change, young adults fresh out of high school, or even your grandma who never went to college and now wants to pick up education as a new hobby.

The deadline closes for this opportunity on May 2 for the Fall 2022 semester. Lisa Raigosa recommends that everyone who is interested applies, even a high school student who hasn’t quite made a decision about their future yet. To fill out the sign-up form takes no formal commitment, and Raigosa says you might as well sign up to create options for yourself after graduation.
