COC Ranked Among Top 25 Community Colleges In Hispanic Enrollment Numbers

College of the Canyons (COC) has been ranked number 18 in Hispanic student enrollment by “The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine.”

“The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine” has rated College of the Canyons as number 18 out of the top 25 community colleges in the category of enrolling Hispanic students, officials said Wednesday.

“We are so proud to have been recognized once again for having a student body that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve,” said COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook. “In line with our college’s Call to Action to ensure campus-wide diversity, equity and inclusion, we are committed to eliminating the barriers that often prevent students from reaching their goals and providing them with the tools and resources they need to ultimately succeed.”

The magazine reportedly ranks community colleges by demographic data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) through its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

According to COC officials, the community college had a 2019 Hispanic population of 15,703 students, around 45 percent of total enrollment, which was 35,018 in Spring of 2019.

The statement by COC also added that current numbers indicate the Hispanic population to be around 47 percent in the 2019-2020 school year.

Some of the successes in higher enrollment numbers are credited to the school’s Canyons Promise program, which began in 2017.

Canyons Promise “provides incoming first-time college students for the fall semester the opportunity to attend College of the Canyons tuition-free for their first two years (fall and spring semesters only),” according to the program’s website.

Canyons Promise courses are offered with the benefits of free Open Educational Resources to use as textbooks, peer mentors and other learning community elements.

To help ensure students remain on track, ongoing counseling and student support is also offered.

“The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine” annual ranking is based on total student enrollment, the percentage of Hispanic students in attendance, two-year schools awarding the most associate degrees to Hispanic students, and the percentage of associate degrees to Hispanic students by two-year schools.

  1. Do you also have extensive recruitment for already Educated Russians/Italians, French, Baltic, Samoans, Vietnamese, Chinese, Swedish, Filipinos, Japanese, etc., etc,?! Discrimination is not nice!! Those who respect the incoming countries and care, always get ahead without condoning & coddleing! The Hispanics come from neighboring countries 100s of miles away & the others from 1,000s away—-shouldn’t they have/need more special treatment?!?!
