College of the Canyons (COC) has a new seed library, where people can pick up seeds to grow vegetables, herbs, flowers and native plants for free.
COC announced Monday that a new seed library is available to members of the campus community at the library on the Valencia campus.
“It is the Library’s hope that this initiative will help address food insecurity, which affects half of California community college students, as well as encourage an atmosphere of environmental consciousness across the campus community,” said a statement from the COC Library.
Those visiting the seed library can pick up three packets of any specific plant seed and 10 packets of seeds total per visit.
The library now includes seeds for 30 vegetable varieties, 10 herbs, 10 flowers and five native species.
Library officials are working to create a seed library at the Canyon Country COC campus.
“The Library is grateful for the support from and collaboration with the Sustainability Center, Classified Senate, and the Hands-on Earth student club,” said a statement from the COC Library. “Thanks as well to the Green Landscape Nursery in Santa Clarita and to a number of individuals for their donations.”
