Joan MacGregor Plans To Step Down From COC Board

College of the Canyons (COC) Board Member Joan MacGregor announced plans to step down from her seat on the board of trustees within the next few months.

MacGregor, who has spent the last 51 years of her life devoted to serving the Santa Clarita Valley education system, announced her plans Wednesday to step down from her seat on the COC Board before her term is up.

“Last night, we had our board meeting, and I told them I would not be completing my full term,” MacGregor said. “My term of office has another 2 and a half years.”

While MacGregor announced her intention to step down early, the exact date of when she plans to resign has not been decided, she said.

Once MacGregor sets an official date of resignation, the college board will then determine how to fill her seat.

The COC Board could fill MacGregor’s seat either by appointing someone, the public could elect someone in the November election, or by holding a special election in the unlikely event of a vacancy.

In November, three seats on the COC Board – not including MacGregor’s seat – will be up for re-election, including trustee Sebastian Cazares, who is not going to rerun.

MacGregor served 20 years on the Sulfur Springs School District Board and then served the COC Board for the last 31 years.

“I’ve appreciated all of the support over the years,” MacGregor said.

MacGregor now plans to relocate and spend more time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
