Joining radio host T. Katz for the segment were sixth graders Cambria Lawrence, Audrey Welch and Peter Shen; and seventh graders Tristen Leem and Alexander Patrus.

First to take the spotlight was Cambria, who chosen as Legacy Christian Academy’s Student of the Week on Feb. 23 for her role as the school’s two-time speech competition champion, ASB vice president and Science Olympiad participant.

Of the five students in the studio, Cambria was one of two wearing a headpiece depicting a lion– the school’s mascot –which resembled part of a costume from the award-winning musical, “The Lion King.”

“I previously just finished a play called ‘The Lion King Jr.,’ which we did at Legacy, and I played Simba,” she explained. “This was actually one of my props that I had to wear for the majority of the play.”

As far as joining the Science Olympiad team this year, Cambria said it’s always been a dream of hers.

“I’ve always loved science,” she recalled. “It’s really fun. You just get to experiment and you get to make conclusions and you get to learn things about the world that you’ve never known before.”

Second to take the spotlight was Audrey, who was chosen as Student of the Week on March 8 for her leadership as the school’s student chaplain, as well as her participation on the Science Olympiad team and ASB.

One of the reasons Audrey said she’s been drawn to science during her time at Legacy is the “hands-on” approach of her teachers.

“That’s especially really fun because it gets the kids involved and it makes us all excited about it,” she said.

As student chaplain, Audrey said she encourages her fellow students “in their everyday walk with Christ,” and opens their chapel time every week with a prayer.

“Legacy stands out in our spiritual environment. Kids are always free to pray, unlike public schools, and they’re always free to talk to their teachers if they’re having issues or they need to know the Lord,” she said. “I think our chapel is definitely a place for kids who maybe don’t necessarily go to church every Sunday where they can learn about the Lord.”

Next to speak was Tristen, who was Student of the Week on March 15 for a poem he wrote about the impact he hopes to make on the world, called “I would rather…”

“Writing has always been a fun habit of mine,” he said, “and as I’ve been going through the years at Legacy, all the teachers have just fostered that love for writing for me.”

Tristen has also participated in the school’s Math Olympics, Science Olympiad and travel basketball team and was ASB president last year.

“I enjoy coming to school,” he said, adding that his teachers “bring out the best in you” and “they give 100 percent every day.”

Peter was named the Student of the Week on March 1 for several championship spelling bee wins, with his most recent win for spelling the word “isosceles.” In addition, Peter is a member of the school’s Science Olympiad and Math Olympics teams.

“I’ve liked numbers since first grade, because in first grade we started doing these things called timed tests where you have two minutes or one minute to do as many (problems) as you can,” he said. “I just felt like there was a joy in doing the problems.”

The last student to take the spotlight was Alexander, the Student of the Week on March 22, who had donned a headpiece he described as a lion’s mane for the radio segment.

“I was on the robotics team, (and) our school mascot is the Legacy Lions,” he explained. “We decided to adopt that as our team name, so we became the Robolions, and this is our lion’s mane for the robotics team.”

Alexander recently helped the Robolions win first place in a qualifying competition against nearly 50 other teams– many of whom were high school seniors –and spends much of his free time volunteering around the community.

“I try to give back to the community, so with my mom, I go teach a church class at our church to a bunch of second graders,” he said. “The school requires 24 hours of community service a year, and I try to double or triple that every year.”
