A new third-party school scheduling app, “Saturn,” has risen to popularity in districts across the nation, raising concerns among guardians who have noted that little verification is needed to access private information.

School programs and law enforcement agencies across the country are cautioning students, staff and guardians about the use of the social scheduling app Saturn.

Claiming to be “the only calendar that supports the complexities of the high school day,” Saturn is significant because of how it allows students to load their course schedules, connect with other students, and get updates about happenings in their school.

The controversy comes from the discovery by parents that few security measures exists to prevent non-students, including adults, from making fake accounts and gaining access to the app, potentially opening up issues of child predators or cyberbullying.

Bark, an online parental monitoring app, posted a review of Saturn that rated it an overall 1.5 out of 5 stars, noting that there were few parental controls and a high potential for harmful content and predation.

While the app had previously posed a major safety concern for teens, the issue appeared to have been resolved as of Wednesday, with non-student emails and phone numbers being blocked from joining the app.

An update from Saturn on the Apple App Store dated Aug.14 included “improvements designed to make the platform safer and more secure,” apparently prompted by the aforementioned consumer complaints.
