The Saugus Union School District held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday to dedicate its new two-story classroom building at West Creek Academy.

“This is a really special school,” said Paul De La Cerda, board member and clerk for the Saugus Union School District’s governing board. “I was really honored to be the president during the time when we opened the school, about eight years ago.”

Students at West Creek Academy were already in the new building participating in the school’s music program within moments of the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“The emphasis of integrating music into the education is at all of our schools,” said De La Cerda. “This school specifically puts emphasis into integrating even more music into the curriculum by identifying pathways in the music areas.”

Some of the pathways available to students at West Creek Academy include keyboarding, drumming, theatre, broadcasting, engineering, and robotics, De La Cerda said.

The Saugus Union School District serves the Santa Clarita communities of Saugus, Valencia and Canyon Country with 15 elementary schools for 10,000 students, and was recently awarded Gold Ribbon Awards for 14 of 15 schools with two Exemplary Arts Awards, according to officials.
